Dohne Breed Development Officer

Job Purpose:
The Breed Development Officer (BDO) is a newly created consultative position reporting to the Australian Dohne Breeders’ Association’s President and Council. The BDO role has been created to encourage Dohne sales by opening up opportunities and building relationships with personnel in industry sectors including; meat processors, commercial producers, and seedstock producers. There is latitude as to how the BDO may undertake the role to progress its objectives.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review the past and prevailing promotional strategies adopted by the ADBA.
  • Develop promotional material including media releases to further awareness and appreciation of the Dohne breed.
  • Liaise with wool and sheepmeat industry personnel to advance awareness of the Dohne breed and its distinct merits.
  • Liaise with Stud Members in order to identify additional opportunities for breed development, and attend Association events and activities that may include; AGM, Coonong Sire Evaluation Trial, Classers’ Workshop, Australian Sheep and Wool Show.
  • Identify opportunities for funding from bodies such as AWI and MLA and commercial enterprises that have an interest in the Dohne breed.
  • Develop a Dohne breed verification program for meat processors.
  • Other duties that may arise as directed by the ADBA Council.

Desirable knowledge and background:
The following attributes are considered desirable but not mandatory:

  • Tertiary-level qualifications in an agricultural science and/or agricultural business discipline.
  • Managerial experience or consultative experience in an agricultural enterprise, ideally one with a livestock focus.
  • Familiarity with strategic planning including marketing and promotional strategy development.
  • Sound knowledge of the Australian sheep industry.
  • High level written and oral communications skills, including the demonstrated ability to communicate sensitive issues to the media and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain collaborative and productive relationships across diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated computer skills.
  • Australian citizenship or residency (mandatory).

Conditions:
The position is offered in a consultancy role reporting to the ADBA President and Council, with an anticipated 20 days’ work per annum. Compensation at industry hourly rates. The BDO will need to cover their own travel and accommodation costs to attend required ADBA events.
