Annual General Meeting Report
What a busy time we had at Bendigo!!
And what an exciting year is ahead!
It was great to see a good crowd coming through the Dohne Marquee and to welcome our visitors from Merino Dohne Uruguay, to our displays and competitions. Huge congratulations to Darren and his Show Committee for a well-run event.
Judging occurred on all three days, plus Saturday we held the AGM in the evening, followed by the General Meeting. Kate Brabin gave an overview of the ADBA Strategic Plan and John Buxton talked predominantly about WEC.
Sunday for the first time Dohne Merinos were represented in the Inter-breed Competition as a prelude to being the Feature Breed at ASWS in 2024.
Council held a brief meeting at the end of the show for election of officers going forward. After 2 years at the helm, Rachel Browne has handed over to Greg Hall and she will continue as Vice President for the next year. She has made her mark over many years’ service to the ADBA, particularly recently on the Promo Committee, Sheep Genetics negotiations, Strategic Planning and Quality Assurance reporting. Her experience, support and enthusiasm will be invaluable in the coming years. There will be a lot of information on those fronts and others, in the next 6 months.
Lynda Farrow, Don Mills, John Nadin, and Darren Gurnett are also continuing on Council and we are all keen to hear from ADBA members with ideas and concerns in the next exciting term.
Thankyou to Murray Rogerson for his many years’ service on Council. We wish him well for the future, hoping he continues an active relationship with ADBA and the Dohne Merino breed. Because Murray has left there is now a vacancy on Council which has your name on it.
Committees are already hard at work in preparation for 2024 when we will be the Feature Breed at ASWS which will be a great opportunity to showcase Dohne Merinos especially through the AMSEA Trial at Coonong Station. Any members can help on these committees, so please consider how you can help.
Looking forward to catching up with as many Dohne Merino Breeders as possible in the next couple of years.

ASWS – Dohne Marquee Report
We are still buzzing with excitement from the recently concluded Australian Sheep and Wool show. The Dohne Marquee was a sight to behold, with seven studs from three different states showcasing their finest exhibits. With a total of 110 exhibits, it was truly a grand national event.
We are immensely grateful for the fantastic team of helpers who dedicated three days to ensuring the Dohne’s were showcased in the best possible light. Their hard work and dedication did not go unnoticed, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to each and every one of them.
Looking ahead to 2024, we are thrilled to announce that the Dohne breed will be the featured breed of the show. This means that next year’s event will be even bigger and better, providing an excellent opportunity for Dohne breeders to showcase their exceptional stock.
We would also like to express our gratitude to the esteemed judges who presided over the event. Stephen Chalmers ADBA Classers and Nutrien Ag Solution Agent, ADBA former president Rachel Browne, Maggie Lahore Ethical Outback Wool, and the three international judges; including two from the Uruguay tour group, Pedro Scremini and Yoel Stolovas and from South Africa, Andries Pienaar White Wool Merino Dohne Stud did a remarkable job in evaluating the exhibits.
While this year’s show was a resounding success, we are always looking to improve and expand. We encourage more Dohne studs to participate in next year’s event, as we aim to match and exceed the grandeur of this year’s national showcase.
A special mention goes out to Coonong Station for their presence at the show. We extend our thanks to Sophie and Tom Holt for their Ethical Outback Wool display, which added an extra layer of diversity and richness to the event.
For those who are already planning to participate in next year’s show, we want to remind you that expressions of interest will need to be submitted early in 2024 to secure an appropriate marquee. We anticipate a high level of interest, so don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity.
Aside from the show itself, the weekend was a great chance to catch up with friends, meet other Dohne breeders, and immerse ourselves in all things Dohne. The camaraderie and passion within our community are truly inspiring, and events like these only strengthen our bonds.
The Show Committee would also like to take the opportunity to acknowledge and thank our sponsors this year; Elders, Nutrien Ag Solutions, Fox & Lillie Rural, ACM, Central West Genetics and Stirling Dohne Stud.
It was great to have Longeranong Agricultural College students once again participate in our education program.
Lastly, we would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Macquarie Dohne for their outstanding achievements at this year’s show. They took home the titles of Champion Ram, Champion Exhibit, and most successful exhibitor. Additionally, a big congratulations to Ulooloo for their well-deserved win of Champion Ewe.
As we eagerly await next year’s show, we can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation and excitement. The Australian Sheep and Wool show has become a highlight on our calendars, and we can’t wait to come together once again to celebrate the remarkable Dohne breed.
Until then, stay connected, keep breeding, and continue to strive for excellence.
Best regards,
Darren Gurnett Convenor, ADBA Show Committee
