March Newsletter 2024

The annual face to face meeting of the ADBA Council was held at Naranderra in mid- February to coincide with the Coonong AMSEA Open Day. Firstly, I would like to thank Don Mills and his committee and Tom and Sophie Holt and the Coonong crew for making the trial and open day such a success. On Monday we spent most of the morning talking about the future of our Dohne Merino breed: looking at pathways for the future including a tiered breeding system, culling percentages, education, joint analysis with Sheep Genetics, Council structure, promotion and research. More information will come through as we receive information back from the relevant contacts. Continue reading

Christmas Newsletter 2023

The year seems to have flown by quickly, and considering all the things coming up for the Dohne Merino breed, the next probably will too! In September Liz and I had the privilege of visiting all studs in Western Australia. Thank you to everyone for your hospitality and for sharing your breeding philosophies, concerns and views regarding the Dohne Merino breed. It was great to put faces to names and we hope these relationships grow in the future. In 2024 we intend to travel to the Eastern States and meet as many as possible there too. Sales for the year have been variable; quality rams have been well supported, but the lack of station orders have made clearance difficult. From what I’ve gathered the shedding breeds have become very popular due to a combination of lack of shearers, cost of shearing, and lower wool prices. This has certainly hurt our breed and other Merinos, but I feel confident that with rising wool and lamb prices (especially for un-mulesed), our breed can re-gain market share. Continue reading

December Newsletter 2023

This is a gentle reminder to get your expressions of interest in for competing at the 2024 Australian Sheep and Wool Show. This is a massive opportunity for our association and one we intend to embrace and take major advantage of and we hope as many members as possible will be able to participate in some form over the course of the weekend. We would like to encourage as many studs as possible to consider participating in this event in some form or another (exhibiting, competing, attendance); and let's make this the best Feature Breed showing the event has seen! States’ Year in Review Western Australia
WA had three studs conducting public auctions this year.
This was down from four studs the previous year and resulted in offerings being down from 508 to 399 rams. The average clearance rate was up to 96% from 77% last year. The state average was $1805, up from $1221 in 2024. WA’s top public auction price was achieved by Far Valley ($7,900), where 98/99 rams offered sold to average $1942. Chirniminup Dohnes achieved the state’s top average price ($2028), and
once again had the largest offering, selling 188 of the 192 rams presented on the day. Mollerin Rock increased their offering on the previous year, also achieving a higher average and higher top price ($1445 and $3100 respectively).
David Kain conducted his final Dohne ram sale in 2025, having recently sold his stud to Mollerin Rock. I would like to congratulate and thank David for his many years of service to the Dohne breed.
