Western Australia is the largest state in Australia with its diverse climate ranging from tropical in the north to arid and semi arid thru the central regions and milder Mediterranean climate thru the south west. The sheep population is spread from Carnarvon in the north to Eucla in the south east, with around 90% being concentrated in the large wheat and sheep areas of the mid south west and higher rainfall areas of the west and south coasts.
Predominantly the production is from meat and wool with lamb turn off being 40%, live export of under 1.5 year old sheep and lambs 40% and mutton 20% of annual sheep production.
WA normally supplies around 75% of Australia’s live sheep exports.This environment and its production are perfectly suited to the Dohne Merino breed.Western Australia has approximately 20% of the National sheep population.
