The first Dohnes to be introduced into eastern Australia was in NSW in 1999.
With NSW having the largest sheep population in Australia (26m) the dohne found its niche straight away as a self-replacing breed & as a prime lamb dam.
The dohne adapted well to the large climatic differentials from the summer predominant rainfall northern sheep wheat belt (620mm average annual rainfall) & northern tablelands (800mm average annual rainfall) to the winter rainfall predominant southern tablelands (895mm annual average rainfall) & to the semi-arid pastoral zone of very low rainfall (240mm annual average rainfall).
Lambs are sold as either trade weight suckers or grown out to heavy export lamb. The high weight gains & lean carcasses make the dohne favourable to feedlotters.
